I wanted to update my previous post to add some groups helping with Hurricane Helene relief. I’ve highlighted some animal charities at the top; thanks Barbara for reminding me that the animals are stressed too.

Please donate if you can. We will be posting more on the relief efforts over the coming weeks.

I went through many hurricanes as a 30 year South Florida resident but Hurricane Andrew is the one I remember most vividly. It was devastating to a fairly narrow swath of South Florida from Palmetto Bay to Florida City on the east coast. I remember talking to people outside the area and they had no idea how bad it was. The rest of the country moved on and we were still cooking on a grill and taking cold showers a month later. It took us nearly two years to rebuild while the rest of the country just moved on. DO NOT FORGET THE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY HELENE. THEY ARE YOUR FELLOW AMERICANS AND THEY NEED A HAND RIGHT NOW.

For Animals

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue

Their shelter was flooded from the storm but they are still working and trying to recover.

Humane Society of the United States

ASPCA

UPDATE: At the request of Brother Wolf Animal Rescue (BWAR), the ASPCA and the Humane Society of Charlotte (HSC) assisted with the emergency transport of 44 homeless dogs and cats from BWAR after the shelter was devastated by severe flooding due to Hurricane Helene. During Hurricane Helene’s destructive landfall on September 26, the animals were housed in temporary foster homes in the Asheville area. After the storm, emergency foster caregivers brought the animals to the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (ASNA) for temporary sheltering before they were transported to HSC in Charlotte, North Carolina, on October 2. The 14 dogs and 30 cats – all of whom are unowned – are receiving medical and behavioral care until they are made available for adoption in the coming weeks. Additional animals from BWAR will be transported tomorrow to MSPCA-Angell in Boston, Massachusetts.

Please remember too that while eastern TN and western NC were hit very hard and are getting a lot of attention right now, this storm affected multiple states. Don’t neglect the ones that aren’t getting as much press.
